ATTACKS IN BAGHDAD AND PROMISES OF SECURITY WITHIN YEAR

IRAQ Misna on Ladysilvia; At least 17 people were killed today in separate car-bomb attacks in Baghdad, as the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki pledged that his government aims to take control of security throughout the nation by the end of 2007. In attendance that this occurs, three separate attacks today hit different areas of the Iraqi capital. In the central Karrada neighbourhood a car-bomb exploded killing ten and wounding 12, based on a first toll issued by the Interior ministry. Also in central Baghdad, three people were killed and five wounded in the explosion of a hand-crafted bomb planted in a parked car. In south-west Baghdad, four policemen were killed when their patrol car was hit by a car-bomb blast. The sad Iraqi toll rises further with the death also of six insurgents and injury of 12 by US forces in different operations conducted in Taji (20km north of Baghdad) and in Garma (50km west of the capital) and the 25 bodies found in the past 24 hours in different areas of Baghdad. In a speech delivered on his behalf by National Security Adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie at a ceremony marking the handover of southern Maysan province from British forces to Iraqi control, Premier Maliki assured that by the end of the year Iraqi security forces will control all national provinces. They currently control only four of 18. Last Monday six ministers of the movement of the radical cleric Moqtada al Sadr withdrew from Maliki’s government to press for a timetable for the pullout of US troops. [BO]
