Paris Equality summit

The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union is holding a second summit on equality on 29 and 30 September 2008 in Paris. 

Brussels :The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission are organising a second summit on equality on 29 and 30 September 2008 in Paris at the Institut du Monde Arabe. It follows on from the first summit on equality organised by the German Presidency in 2007 and the closing conference of the European Year of Equal Opportunities hosted by the Portuguese Presidency.

This summit will bring together 400 high-ranking delegates and representatives from the field of equal opportunities around a single aim: effectively applying the principles of non-discrimination in the European Union. The delegations present will reflect the diversity of the people working in the field of equal opportunities, including institutional partners, local community representatives, social and civil society partners. It will be an opportunity to assess the commitments undertaken by the countries which took part in the European Year of Equal Opportunities, particularly those in the Council resolution adopted in November 2007. It will also give fresh impetus to anti-discrimination efforts and the promotion of equality by creating a longer term perspective, the next stage of which will be the follow-up summit held by the Swedish Presidency in 2009.

2007 was the European Year of Equal Opportunities for all, and gave a new boost to the fight against discrimination and the promotion of equality in Europe by mobilising and strengthening cooperation between all the equality players around very specific projects. It also helped raise awareness among Europeans of their rights to equal treatment and a life without discrimination.
The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union wishes to continue and strengthen this momentum. It has consequently placed equal opportunities and the fight against discrimination at the heart of the EU's social agenda, themes which figure among the French Presidency's most prominent social priorities.

Commitment on the part of Member States within the framework of the EU and the impulse given by the Commission enabled them to reach agreement on the principle of non-discrimination based on six motives (sex, race or ethnic origin, religion or convictions, disability, age, sexual orientation), and adopt several proposals aimed at significantly strengthening the level of legal protection against discrimination.
