MADAGASCAR: Misna. Madagascar’s parliament yesterday passed a law that bans child marriages, widespread on the African Indian Ocean Island.

As reported by the local and international press, the new law raises the legal age of marriage to 18 years from 14 for girls and 15 for boys. The law will come into effect following approval by the senate and the President’s signature. The law reinforces other international accords the country has already signed.

The representative of the local office of the UNICEF (United Nations Child’s Fund) welcomed the law. [BO]
